Our Story

Co-operative Bonds was formed in 2018 with a simple but powerful idea: the organisation that builds capacity for co-operatives, mutuals, and other member-driven enterprises should itself be a co-operative. We believe that co-operative developers should practise what they preach.

Founded by a group of community enterprise developers with extensive experience in the co-operative and mutual enterprise sector, Co-operative Bonds emerged out of a desire to see communities regain control over their futures. We recognised that many traditional, profit-driven models were leaving people behind and that a co-operative approach—grounded in values of self-determination, fairness, and mutual benefit—was the right approach that people were looking for but needed help finding.

From the very beginning, we’ve set out to help purpose-driven organisations build financially viable and sustainable models that put people and community at the centre. Our mission is to create lasting social, cultural, and economic impact by helping co-operatives, mutuals and other member-driven organisations develop strong governance, business, and financial models. We’re happy to say that, since 2018, we’ve supported countless enterprises in achieving their vision for a fairer, more just world.

At Co-operative Bonds, we walk the talk. By being a co-operative ourselves, we embody the values and principles we work to instil in others—co-operation, community development, and a deep commitment to social and economic justice for the common good.
